The Vertigo Annual 1970Vertigo Sampler LPThe sleeve mentions release number 6657001. Lp 1 mentions "6499 407", lp 2 mentions "6499 408". The UK and German versions are almost the identical. The German sleeve is laminated, more shiny than the UK version. The German version has a 'D' in a little square on the top right of the backside, after the release number. The vinyl has 'GEMA' on the B-sides.

The Vertigo Annual 1971 (Greece)Vertigo Sampler LPThis 1971 album is the Greek version of the Vertigo Annual 1970 (see above). The sleeve mentions release number 6657001. Lp 1 mentions "6499 407", lp 2 mentions "6499 408". It is a rare multicoloured vinyl LP. Apparently only 300 copies were pressed. It has multicoloured vinyl ('camouflage green/brown').

Underground GoldVertigo Sampler LPA rare Vertigo stereo LP made in Malaysia. This album has a unique sleeve, that doesn´t appear on any other Vertigo release and has several mistakes in the band names. It features tracks by Black Sabbath (misspelled Sabbaht), Beggar´s Opera, Juicy Lucy, Manfred Mann, Jade Warrior, Colosseum (misspelled Coloseuw), Living Blues, Cressida, Jethro Tull (misspelled Jetro) and Magna Carta, all vertigo artists. It has the Vertigo Swirl logo on the sleeve (top left) and also on top of labels. The label states "The Original the Best". Maybe one of the rarest Vertigo releases, although it is not clear whether this is really an official Vertigo release.

Heads together / first roundVertigo Sampler LPThis is a rare UK spiral original first and only pressing of a unique Vertigo songwriters' workshop (and football!) experiment. This was maybe not a sampler, but a collection of new songs and new writers. A rather hard to find LP featuring an array of great artists and tracks, like:- Jade Warrior: Telephone Girl - Sunbird: Brother Bird - Jimmy Campbell: Lonely Norman - Magna Carta: Good Morning Sun - Martin Carthy: Cold, Haily, Windy Night - Nirvana: Home - John Dummer's Famous Music Band: Nine By Nine - Assagai: Cocoa - Daddy Longlegs: Gambling Man - Clear Blue Sky: Bird Catcher - Tudor Lodge: Willow Tree - Pete Atkin: Beware Of The Beautiful Stranger - Legend: Foxfield Junction - Lassoo: Brothers

Look Out!

Philips goes super stereoDemonstration recordQuite an interesting stereo demonstration record, released by Philips in Holland, 1973. Here's what the text on the inside sleeve says (in four languages):"Towards the end of the last centura, a German firm made the disc music box shown on the left. In its own charming way, it combined the romantic music of the time with the craftsmanshop of the best instrument makers. Today, Philips brings you a complete range of stereo and HiFi equipment that allows you to reproduce your favourite music to perfection. At the flick of a switch - from records, tapes, cassettes or direct from the air. All the elements that go to make up a HiFi system are designed and made by Philips. They reflect the sophisticated electronic craftsmanship available to you today. The music on this demonstration record has been carefully selected to give every music lover the opportunity to hear how his favourite music sounds on the best there is in modern reproduction equipment." Quite nice that Magna Carta was selected by Philips! Here is what they wrote about Magna Carta on the back of the (fold open) album sleeve: "Airport Song: This track comes from Magna Carta's second album 'Seasons' which has been described as a first step towards a change in musical attributes. Record Mirror's verdict: 'Far beyond the normal standard of folk or pop groups, they have that rare punctuality and mastery of scale that marks conscientsious singers.'" An interesting combination of tracks: Peter Covent and his Orchestra, Luis Alberta, Paul Mauriat and his Orchestra, The Syd Lawrence Orchestra, Toots Thielemans, Ray McVay and his Orchestra, Dutch Swing College Band, Daniel Chorzempa (performing Toccata in D minor by J.S. Bach!) and even the famous orchestra Acadamy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields (playing a Rossini sonata). Fascinating...

Suck it and see!Vertigo Sampler LPOther artists on this 2lp are: Rod Stewart, Black Sabbath, Status Quo, Manfred Mann's Earth Band and others. An interesting detail about this album is, that it announces a new Magna Carta album "Frozen Optimist", release date mid-1973. However, this title was never released. In fact, "Frozen Optimist" was Vertigo's working title for the "Lord of the ages" album. "Frozen Optimist" is a phrase from "Sun ain't gonna rise", a song that was originally ment for "Lord", but in the end was not used on that album. The song was later used for "Took a long time / Putting it back together".

Hark! Song of OldlandSpecial Promotion Copy of British Folk
Beautiful Japanese Vertigo sampler. Print is almost completely in Japanese, even the song titles on the back side.
Only the swirl B-side of the lp itself has some English texts (track titles).
The back shows the front cover of the only three Magna Carta lp's that were published on vinyl in Japan:
Seasons, Songs from Wasties Orchard and In Concert. Brown cover with green ink, which is a bit difficult to read. |

Title | Comments |
Magna Canta - Hymn - I'd do anything for love - Enchanted Spirits |
These are releases from a group called 'Magna Canta'. By mistake many sites mistype the band name (a nice proof of the fame of Magna Carta). These titles are house music ('special dance mixes'). |
Magna Carta Records - Attention Deficit - The Moon Revisited - Under The Sun - and many more... |
A confusing fact: there is also a record label named
Magna Carta Records.
It should have been forbidden...
This record company has nothing to do with 'our' Magna Carta. Some artists on the Magna Carta Record label: Steve Morse, December People, Altura, David Lee Roth, Bozzio and Niacin. |
Magna Karta - Straight no Chaser/LSD - The Outsider / Grass Girls |
Apparently in 2005 there are some 12" vinyl albums released by a (new?) UK group called Magna Karta. Their style seems to be drum/bass/jungle. Of course this is not 'our' Magna Carta! |
Magna Carta - Same (a Greek rock band) |
In 1989 a Greek symphonic rock band named itself "Magna Carta" and released an LP called "Magna Carta", (Music Box International - MBI 10335). Do not confuse this album with 'our' 1969 "Magna Carta" album, known as "Same". |
Magna Carta - video games! |
There are even video games for PlayStation 2 (PS2) named Magna Carta! I wonder which music they use. No English folk-rock, I guess... |
